MENA (KFSM) -- A Mena police officer shot and killed a suspect at a convenience store Tuesday (Feb. 16), according to the Mena Police Department.

After the suspect was shot at Kess' Korner on Reeves Avenue, he was pronounced dead at Mena Regional Hospital, Police Chief Brandon Martin said.

Arkansas State Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Shawn Henry Allen Dickens.

A Mena Police officer approached Dickens around noon, and a physical altercation evolved, the release from ASP stated. Dickens then fled on foot and dropped a handgun.

Initial statements from police indicate the fleeing suspect turned to pick-up the gun and simultaneous commands were reportedly given by police for the man to stop and move away from the gun, the release stated.

The commands were reportedly ignored leading to the police officer firing his gun, according to the release.

Dickens' body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for examination to determine the manner and cause of death, the release stated.

The Arkansas State Police will prepare an investigative file relating to the officer involved shooting.  The case file will be submitted to the prosecuting attorney to determine if the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer was consistent with Arkansas laws, the release stated.
