FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- A Pennsylvania-based company announced Tuesday (March 1) it plans to turn the vacant Mitsubishi plant in Fort Smith into a state-of-the-art production facility.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Christopher Astley, the Senior VP of Glatfelter made the announcement at the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce.

Glatfelter will purchase and invest $80 million to build the facility in Chaffee Crossing, which will create approximately 83 jobs and should be completed in late 2017 or early 2018.

According to its website, Glatfelter is a global manufacturer of specialty papers and engineered products headquartered in York, Pennsylvania.

The vacant Mitsubishi building was put on the market in January 2015. Back in 2009 Mitsubishi had plans to build a $100 million wind-turbine plant that was supposed to create 400 jobs, but a legal dispute between General Electric and Mitsubishi put the plans on hold until the plan was scrapped completely.
