FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Fort Smith police are currently searching for an armed robbery suspect.

Police said the incident happened at the Conoco - Doug's Also convenience store on Zero Street in Fort Smith around 11 p.m. Wednesday (March 2).

According  to police, the store clerk was treated on scene for minor injuries. The clerk tried to flee out the door, but the suspect pulled her back inside and demanded money from her at gunpoint, according to a press release.

Police said the suspect is a black male, described as being "tall" and "thin." He was wearing a two-toned gray and black jacket, a dark hooded sweatshirt, black athletic pants and tan boots.

He was armed with a shotgun, according to police. The suspect got away with some cash, but police say it is unclear how much at this point.

Police said the clerk was hiding in the freezer after the suspect left the store. She then called 911 on her cell phone.

The suspect was last seen running from the business on foot, heading toward a car wash to the east of the convenience store.

"If anyone saw a car parked in that car wash just to the east of that location, make sure that you call that in," said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with the Fort Smith Police Department.

Owner of the store, Doug Schwartz, said this is the second time he has dealt with an armed robbery in the 10 years he has owned the convenience store.

"Picture that being your daughter, your sister, your girlfriend. Do the right thing. Let us know who we need to look at for this," Grubbs said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to contact 479-709-5100 or dial 78-CRIME.
