FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Police Chief Kevin Lindsey will resign from his post on Monday (March 14).

Lindsey emailed acting city administrator Jeff Dingman his amended resignation letter on Saturday morning (March 12).

The police chief has scheduled a press conference on Monday at 10 a.m., at which he will deliver a prepared statement, according to a release from the Fort Smith Police Department on Friday.

Lindsey had stated he would resign on April 11, 2016 in his original letter of resignation.

The police chief announced his resignation immediately after apologizing to an African-American employee for making an offensive racial slur in front of the employee, according to Dingman.

When asked if the incident is the reason Lindsey resigned Dingman said, “Because of my own speculation, I believe that it probably was.”
