FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Designs for a new park that will bring a fun and family atmosphere to Fort Smith will be voted on Tuesday (March 15).
During the meeting, city leaders will vote on the plans for a 51 acre park to be built along Riverfront Drive in Fort Smith. Last week, the Board of Directors was presented with the master plan. The outlines for the park include several soccer fields, a playground, and a walking trail. Also included are plans for a future community center that would feature an indoor swimming pools and basketball courts.
The park would be built on 51 acres near the Arkansas River and would be one of the largest parks in the area if it gets the Boards' approval. Crews would begin work on the land about two miles north of Harry E. Kelley Park.
The first phase of the plan includes the construction of the soccer fields and the extension of Spradling Avenue.
Folks that live in the area are excited to see this could be happening in Fort Smith. "It's been a long time coming.. if it's in the works I'm glad to see it's going in," said Fort Smith resident Mike Cross. "I hope it will be great place where kids can play and have fun."
If the plans do get approved, work could begin as early as this summer.
City leaders will meet at 6:00 p.m. at the Fort Smith Public Schools Service Center. They will also discuss zoning for a new storage facility on Massard Road which has been opposed by several Fort Smith residents.
