GREENWOOD (KFSM) - One local police department is hosting a class that will teach people what to do in an active shooter situation.

As shootings in public facilities have become too common in recent years,  the Greenwood Police Department wants to ensure that the public can protect themselves if it were to ever happen.

Starting this week, registration can be done by stopping by or calling the Greenwood Police Department. There is room for 44 people to attend and officers said they have already had many sign ups.

In the one day class, people will be taught by two officers and learn how to survive in an active shooter situation.

During the four-hour session, people will get hands-on experience. Officers will set up scenarios and act like an incident is actually happening. Participants can learn on how to avoid injury and identify make shift weapons.

The class will be this summer on June 4, 2016. It's free and open to the public.

This is the first time the Greenwood Police Department is hosting this class. If all goes well, more classes will be offered in the future.
