FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The city of Fort Smith has filled another one of its vacant director positions.

Acting city administrator Jeff Dingman announced on Friday that Mark Schlievert has been named as the city’s sanitation director.

Schlievert has been the Director of Solid Waste for Berkely County (S.C.) Water and Sanitation.

“Mr. Schlievert’s technical background in landfill management really stands out,” Dingman said in the release. “He demonstrated knowledge and ability in all aspects of solid waste management, and his ability to successfully plan and manage a landfill and provide for its sustainability helped to convince me he was the right individual for the job.”

Doug Reinert, the Fort Smith Parks and Recreation director, has served in an interim basis since the firing of former sanitation director Baridi Nkokheli. Dingman stated that Reinert will continue to work in that capacity until Schlievert arrives.

He will assume his duties in Fort Smith on April 18, according to the release. Dingman stated that his salary would be $85,000 per year.

“I am looking forward to serving as Director of Sanitation for the City of Fort Smith,” Schlievert said in the release. “I was very impressed with how clean the city was during my visit, a testament to the community’s commitment to excellence.”
