GREENWOOD (KFSM) -- The Greenwood Police Department is asking drivers to use caution after a grease spill on Tuesday (March 29).

Crews are power-washing part of Highway 10 Spur, and part of Highway 71 after a grease truck leaving Sonic spilled grease for about two miles, according to Chief Will Dawson.

Dawson said the driver of the truck, who works for Value Stream Environmental Services, forgot to put a hose back in place, causing the grease to flow out.

Crews spread sand on the affected areas of the highways to help absorb the grease, but before that happened, drivers dealt with slick roads for about two hours.

Dawson said no accidents were caused from the slick roads.

"Naturally, there's not the friction to stop between the tire and the asphalt. The grease was causing cars to actually slide if they tried to brake quickly. So luckily, nobody needed to brake quickly and stop today during this time of clean up," he said.

Police urge drivers to continue using caution Wednesday (March 30), because with rain in the forecast, Dawson said it could cause grease to rise out of the asphalt. Dawson estimates the clean up effort could cost about $20,000, for which he said the trucking company will pay.
