WASHINGTON COUNTY (KFSM) -- An amendment proposal to a dangerous animal ordinance in Washington County failed Tuesday evening (March 29).

A special quorum court meeting was held to decide on an emergency ordinance regarding dangerous and potentially dangerous animals.

The proposal stems from an incident in which a Fayetteville cyclist was attacked by a dog while out on what he called a routine training ride in Washington County in February.

"We have more work to do," Paxton Roberts, a supporter of the ordinance, said after the vote. "We won't stop, we will keep working with the sheriff's office and quorum court to come up with an ordinance that works."

The quorum court was considering changes that would have included allowing the public to report potentially vicious animals before they attack and stricter confinement laws in county areas.

Many of the quorum court members said they would support future ordinances for vicious animals, but they felt this one was not the best proposal.

"I would support an ordinance that would move back and make it very clear what the animal is doing that is causing the issues," said Justice of the Peace Gary McHenry.
