BELLA VISTA, Ark. (KFSM) - The first ever Bella Vista Farmers Market kicked off on Sunday (April 17).

The popular trend is popping up around the country and city leaders wanted to make sure they got in on the action.

Cloudy skies didn't keep the Hall family from the inaugural event.

They rode their bikes up from Bentonville to browse the many tables with locally grown produce and other homemade products.

"It's nice," said Natalie Hall, standing with her husband and son. "We're looking forward to it growing and having more produce and even some of those natural cheeses."

It's all part of an effort by Bella Vista leaders to make the city more attractive to younger families after being ranked as one of the best places to retire.

"The demographics are changing here in Bella Vista," said Alison Archer, coordinator of the farmers market. "There are more families now than there ever were before. The mayor and I went through a discovery process of several months deciding on which day and how to target our audience."

Vendors were joined by live musical performances, torch juggling and activities for the kids.

Archer says in the end, it's about bringing families into the community and getting them to support fellow residents.

"It is my sincere position in Bella Vista to bring out families and community," said Archer. "Our demographics are changing. I want to bring music, I want to bring a family afternoon and I'd like to bring health and wellness to the community."

The Bella Vista Farmers Market will be held every Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm in the parking lot of Mercy Bella Vista.
