VAN BUREN (KFSM) -- According to national studies, every two minutes someone in the country is raped. On Friday (April 22), the Crisis Intervention Center reminded local students about this unsettling statistic.
Several boys in the Van Buren School District joined in to "walk a mile in her shoes," meaning they sported high-heeled shoes for a one-mile walk.
They participated in the walk to show support for the cause, by raising awareness about sexual assault, rape and gender violence.
They also gained a different perspective, as the walk helps men understand and appreciate women's experiences.
Not only are they trying to raise awareness across the community, but they also honored the survivors of domestic violence and remembered those who did not survive.
During the event, organizers had the chance to get a discussion started about the topic of sexual violence, which can be difficult to talk about.
The money raised will be used to help clients at the Crisis Intervention Center.
