GREENWOOD (KFSM) - A local fire department is going to be seeing some major updates to their station coming this summer as fire station one in Greenwood is under construction.

Crews are simply adding more room for equipment at their current facility. Crews started construction starting at the beginning of the year. Workers are building on three different bays to hold equipment that they have such as, a command and rehab trailer, brush truck, and another engine that they have storage.

Right now, the equipment is kept outside in the weather right behind their station. However, with the new addition it will soon be inside and protected. Also, it will be more handy in an emergency situation.

The $600,000 project has a a majority of the cost going towards the firefighter's driveway. "We are talking eight inches of concrete to handle the weight of the trucks," said Greenwood Fire Chief Stewart Bryan.

According to Chief Bryan, "It will have a nice finished look to it with the whole addition matching the rest of our station."

Chief Bryan said they're hoping to get construction complete on their new addition sometime in August.

After this project is done, the fire chief said they're working on building fire station number three. The new facility will be located on Highway 71. Planning  on the project will begin at the end of the year.
