FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with Kiwanis Club to make even more of an impact in the community.

Thursday (May 5) the sheriff’s office is holding a cookout as a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Boy’s Camp. It’s a free summer camp that’s held at Lake Fort Smith. Since 1937, the Kiwanis Boy’s Camp has been able to provide a free summer camp to over 13,000 area boys. Many of whom have lacked role models, discipline and a positive direction in their lives.

This summer, approximately 100 boys, ages 9 through 11, will be selected to attend Kiwanis Boy’s Camp. Nominations come from area schools through the teachers and school counselors that want to reward those who are setting an example for their classmates.  Organizers said they try to place a heavy emphasis on leadership, fellowship and self-discipline, and this camp does just that; but they need donations to do so.

“That costs a little bit of money to really make sure they are well taken care of, so we look forward to any help the community has to give,” said Camp Coordinator Steven Riggs. “Whether it be in dollars or in kind donations to help us put on this great camp for all the boys we have,” Riggs added.

The cookout will be held at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Smith. Everyone is welcome to attend.
