BENTONVILLE (KFSM) -- What is becoming known as the Market District in downtown Bentonville is getting its first residential building.

Caitlin Kelley and Emily Fierer of southern California make up the first woman-owned architect and developer team that is in charge of the $10 million project. The residential building will be made up of 15 lofts that Kelley and Fierer say supports city leaders' vision to make Bentonville a city where people can walk to where they live, work and play.

"It's a very active, lively community," Kelley said before the groundbreaking ceremony for the project Thursday (May 19). "There are a lot of things happening in so many different directions."

The lofts will be located across the street from the former Kraft plant, which will be transformed into a new, contemporary art venue that will be an extension of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

"It is part of a community that we think of as very creative for creative people in a very creative part of the city," Firer said.

The lofts will also be within walking distance of the Bentonville Square.

Bentonville resident Susan Tonymoen is excited about the project.

"The concept will keep the downtown area of Bentonville alive and vibrant," she said.

Michelle Dearing, realtor who specializes in property sales in downtown Bentonville, said the Market District is thriving and urban living spaces will only add to the area.
