OKLAHOMA CITY (KFSM) — Oklahoma legislators are sending an anti-abortion bill to the governor’s desk after it passed the Senate on Thursday.

The bill would make performing an abortion a felony, punishable by up to a three-years prison sentence, News 9 reported. Additionally, it would restrict physicians from continuing to practice medicine in Oklahoma, by banning them from obtaining or renewing their licenses.

Now, the bill will go to Governor Mary Fallin’s desk.

Republican Senator Nathan Dahm said he was hopeful that the bill could lead to overturning Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.

The Center for Reproductive Rights said the measure is the first of its kind in the nation, News 9 reported. Abortion rights groups have already labeled the bill as unconstitutional.

Additionally, the Oklahoma House of Representative also passed legislation on Thursday that would require the state Department of Health to develop informational material “for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society.” The information would cover the developmental stages of a fetus and alternatives to abortion.

However, legislators didn’t approve funding for the bill, which is now heading to the Senate.
