BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KFSM) - A milestone for law enforcement in Bentonville on Saturday (May 21) as the police department celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Officers in turn held a larger birthday party and invited the very people they protect and serve on daily basis.

"We decided to put together this community event to try to give back a little bit and also let the public know," said Jon Simpson, Bentonville Police Chief. "Let the community know some of the things we offer, meet some of our staff and hopefully come out and have a good time with their kids."

Helicopters and swat searches were put on for show, which gave residents a first hand look at the operations of the department.

Shawn Williams brought out his kids to the festivities, which he called a learning lesson.

"It's just about exposing our kids to all the great law enforcement we have and the fire department," said Williams "Letting them see the action."

Alissa Carlson said it's a great way to get the community closer with law enforcement.

"It brings the community together and the police can interact with everyone and so can the firefighters," said Carlson. "It's just great to hangout and eat and bond together as a town."

U.S. Senator John Boozman recognized the anniversary in the Congressional Record. The Bentonville Police Department was founded on May 9, 1916.
