(POTEAU) KFSM- The weather is starting to get warmer and one local non-profit organization is working to make sure homeless veterans in our area have enough to drink.

In doing so, they're also honoring the life of a special soldier.

Specialist, Robert Allen Pierce was killed in action on June 3, 2013.

In honor of him, Pierce's family held a fundraiser today at Walmart in Poteau, the same place where he once worked.

Pierce's family hopes to keep his legacy going.

"The only way we can keep him alive and keep his spirit alive and what he has done for our country, especially at a time like this, is to do events like this," Dart said.

The non-profit is accepting all donations; in water bottle form and with raffle contests.

In the fall, the group donated six car loads of clothing to help keep the vets warm through the winter and Dart said helping someone in need is easier than you think.

"Too many people are quick to raise their hand to pint, but not quick enough to raise their hand to help. It only takes one act to change the life of somebody who signed up knowing he may not come home," Dart Said.

With the drive on Sunday, nearly 6,000 bottles of water have been donated and will be given to the shelters in Fort Smith who house homeless veterans.
