FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Arkansas’ pitching coach Dave Jorn announced Monday his retirement after a combined 20 year career with the Razorbacks.
Jorn first began his time at Arkansas under former coach Norm DeBryin from 1983 to 1988. He then worked in the MLB before returning to the Razorbacks in 2003 under current coach Dave Van Horn.
During his tenure as the Razorbacks’ pitching coach, Jorn made a lasting and profound impression on the Arkansas baseball program that included six trips to the College World Series, 18 NCAA Tournament berths, 13 40-win seasons and five no-hitters from his pitchers. He has also helped shaped the arms of 45 Hogs who have been drafted while he was coaching, including Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel, and current major leaguers Drew Smyly, and Mike Molsinger.
Since 2003, Jorn had eight pitching staffs finish the season with an ERA of less than 4.00, including five of the last seven seasons.
Between his stints at Arkansas, Jorn worked in player development in the New York Yankees’ minor league system. He then worked in the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations before rejoining the Yankees in 2001 as a scout.
“We are planning on staying here,” Jorn said. “I don’t know what’s in my future right now, but I am not ready to totally retire and get out of baseball. I am thinking about going back into professional baseball, possibly scouting, maybe player development, working with some younger players in the minor leagues. I don’t know anything definitive at this point but I am not done working. I still want to keep working and still want to stay in baseball.”
