CLARKSVILLE (KFSM) — A Johnson County jury found Fred Kauffeld guilty of one count of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the shooting death of Reserve Deputy Sonny Smith.
He has been sentenced to 28 years for the murder charge, and five years and a $5,000 fine for burglary. The sentences will run concurrently.
He had originally been charged with two counts of capital murder.
The jury found Kauffeld was also guilty of residential burglary. They found he was not guilty of two counts of attempted capital murder.
Kauffeld’s trial started Tuesday in Clarksville. The jury heard two days of testimony and even heard from Kauffeld himself.
