TAHLEQUAH (KFSM) -- A Rogers boy died Monday (May 30) after he was pulled underwater on the Illinois River, according to the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.

Jayden Wisrock, 11, died at a Tulsa hospital after he had to be put on life support following the accident, Ed Fite with the OSRC said.

Fite said Wisrock was floating on an air mattress on the water, when his legs became tangled in some underwater brush. The boy was under water about 10 to 12 minutes before he was pulled up by the Illinois River Fire Department, according to Fite.

He was taken to a to a Tahlequah hospital before being transported to Tulsa, where he was placed on life support and later died.

Wisrock's mother and older sister tell 5NEWS Jayden was an amazing he kid, who loved riding his bicycle at the Railyard bike park in Rogers and playing combat games on his Xbox 360.

"He always knew how to make people laugh and smile! Anyone who knew Jayden knew he was a strong kid. If he got hurt he would usually just be upset for a minute then get right back up and show everyone the cool scratch or bruise he got from it. He was so full of life!" his sister wrote in a Facebook message to 5NEWS. "He loved picking on his siblings just to get a good laugh for himself and whoever he was picking on. He was an amazing uncle to my daughter. His world would light up when she was around! I know she has a great guardian angel now!"

A spokesman for the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission said this tragedy should remind all parents to encourage their children to wear life jackets while swimming, even if the child is an experienced swimmer.

“To date, I have never recovered a drowning victim, or been with anyone who recovered a drowning victim, who was wearing a life jacket,” Ed Fite said.
