ARKANSAS (KFSM) -- More than 900 children in the River Valley area are in need of families and homes.

Khris and Kati Miller have been a family of two for a long time, but this year they will be adding another chair to their kitchen table as the couple opens up their home to 16-year-old Zahn.

"We have been struggling for about five years to have a child," said Kati. "About two years ago we decided foster care was the way we wanted to go and to just help out."

Zahn, whose nickname is Shady, enjoys playing sports, riding horses and hanging out with friends.

At the age of 10 he was taken away from his mother and father.

According to the Miller's, when they first met Zahn it was love at first site.

"We were originally wanting a zero to five-year-old, and 16 is way out of that spectrum, but it worked out," Khris said.

The couple realized how much they had in common with the teen and knew he should be part of their forever family.

"It is awesome just waking up and having someone needing to be there and needing that support," Kati said.

Zahn's adoption will be finalized later this year. The Miller family plans to adopt younger children in the future when the time is right.

Kati and Khris like to joke with family and friends about how life has thrown the couple some curve balls.

"We just started backwards," said Kati. "We want to make sure we can handle a teenager then we will go down to babies."

According to the Arkansas Department of Human Services, the adoption process takes about four to six months then the child must live with the family for an additional six months before an adoption is finalized.

If you are interested in opening your home to foster children, DHS is always on the lookout to place kids in temporary homes until they can reunite with their families.
