TULSA (KFSM) — Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus were found in Tulsa, the Tulsa Health Department confirmed on Tuesday (June 7).

Seven mosquito trap samples from around Tulsa County tested positive for the virus, reported KOTV. The health department sets several mosquito traps around the county to monitor the pests.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans most frequently through a mosquito bite.

While the majority of people infected with West Nile will suffer no symptoms, the CDC reports that about one in five people will develop Febrile illness, with symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Roughly 1 percent of people who are infected with the virus develop a serious neurologic illness.

The infected mosquitoes were found around north and south Tulsa.
