FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Fort Smith Public Schools named a new director of athletics and student activities director on Friday (June 17).
Darren McKinney, a graduate of FSPS, will replace Jim Rowland, who announced his retirement on May 23 after spending 25 years as the Fort Smith athletic director.
McKinney is no stranger to the district, as he started his career as a science teacher and coach at Kimmons Junior High, then moved to Darby in 2005 to be the assistant principal. He took over as the Darby principle in 2010.
McKinney has worked with both the Northside football and Southside basketball programs, and teaches as an adjunct professor at UAFS.
“It is truly an honor to be selected as director of athletics and student activities for the Fort Smith Public Schools,” McKinney said. “I look forward to building on the strong leadership set forth by Coach Bill Stancil and Coach Jim Rowland. I am excited to continue to be able to help foster growth for all of our Fort Smith Public Schools athletics and student activities. I look forward to the challenge ahead while building on our tradition.”
Incoming FSPS superintendent Gordon Floyd said he was keenly aware of the responsibility involved in choosing the person who will sit in the chair of past athletic directors Bill Stancil and Jim Rowland.
“I believe Darren McKinney is a worthy successor to these two men, and will take our athletic and activities program to a new level,” Floyd said. “Darren’s experience as a coach and a principal have equipped him with the skills he needs as an administrator, and his deep roots in our community have given him a vision and passion for the children of our school district. I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Dr. McKinney in his new role.”
