FORT SMITH (KFSM) – A local non-profit organization that helps families in need is having financial trouble and is struggling to keep their doors open.

The Golden Rule Clothes Closet is located in downtown Fort Smith. They give away gently used items such as clothing, shoes and kitchen appliances.

The United Way based agency provides for low-income families and victims of fires and natural disasters.  “We had over 46,000 people walk through that door last year,” said Clyde Chaney, Director of the Golden Rule Clothes Closet. “And we gave away over $2 million worth of clothes,” Chaney added.

The organization began in a single room at a local school, but has now grown into a large building that was donated to them by First National Bank.

However, the non-profit organization is currently in need of funding. Right now, they rely on donations from the United Way of Fort Smith and area churches.

Workers said that utilities and insurance bills are piling up every month, and they also have to pay salaries for their four working employees. “It takes money to operate,” said Chaney. “We need money to keep the doors open.”

Workers said they will take any donations. However, in able to keep the place running they need $20,000 to $30,000 to stay open through September.

If you’re interested in donating, you can stop by their location in downtown Fort Smith on North 3rd Street, or click here.

Chaney said the organization plans to hold fundraisers and events throughout the year to help raise funds. One special fundraiser will be in November to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
