FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- A Fayetteville church invited all members of the community to come together for a prayer vigil Friday (July 8) to remember all the lives lost in the past week, including the five officers killed by a black man in Dallas, as well as Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, both black men killed by police officers.

“It is important for us to show the importance of prayer," Christ Seawood, Executive Pastor at Historic St. James Baptist Church, said. "At the end of the day, God has not forgotten us. He is still actively involved in the lives of his people."

More than 100 people packed into the church to pray for the country.

"The bible says ‘love covers a multitude of sins," so tonight we want to express love," Pastor Curtis Smith said.

Those in attendance said few things could bring the nation together the way prayer does.

"At the end of the day, that is what brings us together, that commonality that we want peace," Seawood said.

Several speakers shared how the deaths across the nation have impacted them.

"We want to come out and show that this community rallies around the idea that humanity is important. Life is important," Smith said.

Vigil organizers said they hope the nation will use prayer and peace to get the country through a difficult time and encouraged unity rather than future attacks on each other.

"It is not a black and white issue. This is a human issue," Smith said. "We need to come together as a community, to assure what is happening across this country does not happen here in Northwest Arkansas."
