Sweet Tea Raises Kidney Stone Risk

Sweet tea -- it's just part of life in the south. However, as much as we love it, doctors say it's time to cut back, especially in this part of the country.

Doctors are saying that sweet tea can lead to painful kidney stones.

"The most frequent type of stone is composed of calcium and oxalate," said Dr. Jorge Gutierrez, a urologist at Wake Forest Medical Center. "And especially in this part of the country there are lot meals rich in oxalate. And I will mention especially tea. A lot of people drink tea here. Tea is not good because it is rich in oxalate."

Men are four times more likely to develop kidney stones than women, and that risk jumps significantly for men over the age of 40.

To reduce your risk of developing a kidney stone, doctors suggest staying hydrated.

Although drinking water is best, they also said that lemonade is another good option that won't put you at risk of developing kidney stones.
