AURORA, Colo. — A Colorado deputy survived an attempted robbery after firing a “one in a billion” shot directly into the barrel of his assailant’s gun.

Deputy Jose Marquez was walking through an apartment complex on Jan. 26, when two armed men approached him with their guns drawn, reported Fox 31.

The two men fired at Marquez, who was off duty at the time, hitting him in the chest and abdomen. However, Marquez returned fire and hit one of the men, who was later identified as Jhalil Meshesha, in the leg. The other suspect managed to run away and has not been identified.

Amazingly, another one of Marquez’ bullets traveled straight down the barrel of Meshesha’s gun, completely disabling it.

“It was determined that one of the shots that Deputy Marquez fired from his .45 caliber handgun actually hit Meshesha’s .40 caliber handgun and traveled down the barrel, colliding with a cartridge that was in the chamber of the gun,” Arapahoe County Deputy District Attorney Rich Orman wrote in a letter. “Detective (Matt) Ingui described this as a ‘one in a billion thing.’”

Marquez has not returned to work since the shooting, but officials deemed that his actions and use of force were justified.
