FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Parrot Island Water Park in Fort Smith let all first responders in for a fun day full of competitive games, swimming, and quality time with their families Sunday (July 17).

"On a daily basis, they're running into situations that we're usually running away from," Parrot Island General Manager Bill Miller said. "It's great to have them out with their family, and be able to enjoy, and for us to really show that we appreciate everything they do. They put it on the line every day where most of us aren't in that position, we don't take that role."

The teams participated in competitions including a water balloon challenge, Gatorade pong, and a lip-syncing battle.

Sugar Loaf firefighter James Sutliff said it feels good to know the community appreciates his work.

"We're the ones that always go out, and not a lot of the first responders get recognized for what we do, so we appreciate it a lot," he said.

The firefighters hope to see even more teams participate next year.

"I really enjoy it," Huntington firefighter Michael Kinsey said. "They want to do an annual deal, get more people involved, more departments involved, and hopefully more will show up."

After all the competitions, the winning team received a Parrot Island Cup trophy.

Parrot Island will make this an annual event and Miller said they will add more games and teams next year.
