CHARLESTON (KFSM) - The final stages of a multi-million dollar renovation project are underway at one local school. Work has already been done on Charleston High School and Middle School. Now, it's time for some changes at the Elementary School.

The Elementary School in Charleston was built in 1963, so leaders said it's due for some renovations on the outside of the building.

Construction crews started working on this $2.5 million project when school ended in May. What crews are doing is completely remodeling the outside of the building. After it's done, guardians will  have a new, safe area to drop off the kids. Employees will also have an up-to-date office area in the front of the building. It will also be complete with administrative offices and an area for a nurse's station.

The new renovations will be providing more high-tech security for the school. This includes limited access to get into the building, which makes the employees and students safer. School officials are trying out the new electronic system. Official said the staff will now have an electronic key which will have access to certain doors on campus.

In several different areas throughout the school, they're remodeling the hallways and installing new lighting. With all the new renovations that are coming to the facility, Superintendent Jeff Stubblefield said the staff is excited to start working. "They think the opportunity for the modern offices and more modern medical area is much needed in the school," said Stubblefield.

Kids will be able to walk the new hallways this coming August. However, the outside of the building including the parking lot, and administrative offices won't be complete until November.

The money for the renovations came from an extension from their present millage.
