Tulsa Standoff

TULSA — Tulsa police are were involved in a two-hour standoff with a pickup truck driver that began late Monday morning (July 18), after a woman drove her vehicle in circles at the entrance to the Tulsa Air National Guard Base saying her truck had a bomb.

Around 11:30 a.m., the woman began driving her dark green, four-door Chevrolet pickup truck in a circle while waving a white flag or cloth out the window, reported News on 6. Then she stopped on the driveway of the 138th Fighter Wing, off 46th Street North.

Police negotiated with the woman, who was identified as 29-year-old Heather Thomas, for about two hours before she stopped her truck and got out. Police also spotted a German Shepherd dog inside the truck, and it was taken into the custody of two civilians.

After Thomas was taken into custody, officers checked the vehicle for explosives or weapons but found none. She was taken for a mental health evaluation.

Officers blocked the driveway, and later shut down both lanes of traffic on 46th Street North while the negotiations were taking place.

At one point Thomas began backing up toward the line of police officers at one point, prompting them to leave their vehicles and move back. Another time, a member of the 138th fighter wing security force came within about 15 feet of the truck, but then later returned to the security checkpoint at the end of the driveway.

The Tulsa Bomb Squad and the Homeland Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms all had representatives at the scene.
