SPIRO (KFSM) -- The man involved in a shooting with an officer outside of Spiro in LeFlore County has been identified as 70-year-old Johnnie Thomas Reed, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale said around 2:30 p.m. a Spiro officer received a tip that a wanted sex offender from Missouri was staying at a residence on Ashley Road. The Spiro officer was authorized to go to the residence.

After Reed answered the door he charged back into the residence and grabbed a firearm. Reed attempted to shoot the officer which led to a struggle over the firearm. The officer was able to reach for his weapon and fire a shot, immobilizing Reed.

The sheriff said Reed was flown to St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa with what is considered a non-life threatening injury.

Leflore County Undersheriff Kendall Morgan said the Spiro officer involved in the shooting is okay and only suffered minor bruising from the scuffle.

Reed will be held on charges of child molestation, aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, failure to register as a sex offender, and possession of a firearm after felony convictions, according to the sheriff.

Police did search Reed's camper trailer and recovered the holster of the firearm Reed attempted to shoot at the officer.

Sheriff Seale said police believe Reed may have been staying on Ashley Road for as many as six months.
