SPIRO (KFSM) -- Police officers said they received a tip that a man named John Reed was staying at a home on Ashley Road in Spiro. Police believed the man had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from a case of child sexual abuse in Missouri.

"We were told that he may possibly be trying to flee the area is the reason why there was urgency to get out there and speak with him," said Spiro police chief Michael Draper.

The officer who arrived is not being identified at this time but was wearing a body camera as he approached the travel trailer Reed was inside.

The body camera equipment picked up the conversation.

"Mr. Reed, I need to talk to you for a second," the officer said.

"Alright. Talk away," Reed told the officer.

"My understanding is you have some warrants out of Missouri," the officer continued. "You need to step on outside for me, ok?"

"Let me get my suspenders on," Reed replied.

Reed went to go back inside of the trailer when the officer told him not to.

"No sir. Can't do it," the officer said as he followed Reed into the travel trailer.

The video shows Reed pulling a gun on the officer. The two struggled for several minutes as the officer pleaded with Reed to drop the weapon.

"Mr. Reed don't do it," the officer said. "Let me have the fire arm okay?"

The struggle continues and the officer pleaded one last time with Reed.

"Mr. Reed please let go of the gun. I don't want to die. I've got kids," he said.

The officer fired his weapon and, according to Draper, Reed was hit in the hip.

"I believe he had every intention of shooting the officer. I'm 100 percent behind him. He did everything he had to do," Draper said.

Investigators said Reed is in a hospital with non life threatening injuries. They believe he will soon have surgery on his hip.

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale said his office is also talking to three children from the Spiro area that Reed may have had contact with. He said there could be more charges filed against Reed.

Once released from the hospital, investigators said Reed will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

The Spiro police officer is on paid leave pending an investigation into the shooting. Draper said he expects the officer to return to work in one week.
