FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Fort Smith Police Department was investigating after an officer hit and killed a pedestrian with his patrol vehicle Sunday (Aug. 6), according to Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with Fort Smith police.

Officer Jarrod Taylor was driving south on Highway 271 around 3:30 a.m. to back up another officer needing assistance when he hit Jonathan Logston, 36, of Heavener, Oklahoma, Grubbs said.

Logston was pushing a motorcycle northbound in the southbound lanes when he was hit, according to Grubbs. Taylor could not see the motorcycle since it was not running and its lights were off, Grubbs said.

Logston struck the windshield and the front pillar of the patrol vehicle, which caused fatal injuries, according to Grubbs.

The accident is under investigation.

Logston’s sister, Amanda, released the following statement to 5NEWS: “As a family, we continue to grieve the loss of Jon. Jon was a loving father, brother, uncle, and son. We appreciate all the love and support we have received.”
