A baby girl was the first person in the United States to die from the Zika virus.
Doctors said the baby girl was born with birth defects consistent with the Zika virus.
She died a short time after being born.
Houston health officials said there is no evidence of Zika in local mosquitoes.
“We want to emphasize that,” said Dr. Umair A. Shah, of Harris County Public Health Department. “At the same time, it’s important for us to give this information to our community to confirm the first Texas and Harris County travel-associated Zika related death here.”
Doctors said the mother traveled to Latin America during her pregnancy, where it is suspected that she became infected with the virus.
