NYPD Apprehends Man Who Scaled Trump Tower With Suction Cups
NEW YORK — A man scaling Trump Tower using giant suction cups was roughly pulled into the building at about 6:30 p.m. by members of the New York Police Department after reaching the 21st floor.
“Individual climbing #TrumpTower has been apprehended. Excellent job by @NYPDSpecialops & all supporting personnel,” tweeted Inspector Peter J. Venice, commanding officer of the Midtown North Precinct.
Neither the climber’s identity nor his political purpose, if any, were immediately clear as the long-haired man in baseball cap and climbing gear slowly pulled his way up the glass structure.
Trump Tower is Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s highest-profile property, and where his campaign is headquartered — next to Central Park in Manhattan.
The real estate mogul was not in the building at the time of the climb, but on the campaign trail in Virginia.
Twitter users posted photos and videos of a man who started scaling Trump Tower in Manhattan Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses said he appeared to be using suction cups to climb the side of the building, according to WPIX.
The daredevil drew a massive police response, a crowd of officers can be seen below him, trying to talk the man into coming down.
It’s not the first time a daredevil has taken to climbing a skyscraper in New York City. In 1977, George Willig scaled 2 World Trade Center, one of the 110-story Twin Towers.
As recently as 2008, the New York Times building was scaled by three different men over a few days in June 2008.
This is a developing story.
