SILOAM SPRINGS (KFSM) -- Earlier this year Carl Albert State College announced that due to budget shortfalls in Oklahoma it would have to cut several degree and sports programs.

Some good news for students, they will now be able to continue their education at John Brown University’s Fort Smith campus, online and with their traditional undergrad program.

Dean of degree completion programs at John Brown University Stacey Duke said this will give students more options to complete a four year degree and not take away from the Oklahoma education system.

"We also have reverse articulation as part of the agreement," Duke said. "So they will continue to finish their four year degree, their associates with Carl Albert while they are taking classes here at John brown as an option.”

Currently JBU has almost 3,000 students enrolled in their three campuses and online. They hope this will grow not only their bachelors but also masters programs.

Duke said if students follow the plan they create for them, they will not lose any credits and academic advising will show different educational paths they can pursue.

“This gives working adults an additional option because a lot of times they have a lot of different focus...family, work, home life that pulls them," Duke said. "So they need to have career options, educational options and we are trying to give that to them.”

Over the next 18 to 24 months those students at Carl Albert will have the option to transfer their credits to JBU. Duke said this is the first of many articulation agreements that John Brown is planning over the next two years.

“We`re really wanting to partner with the two years institutions to create easier pathways for not only students in Southwest Arkansas but also in Northwest Arkansas and across the state,” Duke said.
