Crawford County Inmate Who Walked Off Work Detail Found Hiding In Van Buren Home

CRAWFORD COUNTY (KFSM) — Deputies have found an inmate who went missing from the Crawford County Detention Center on Wednesday (Aug. 24).

The Sheriff’s Department said 41-year-old Billy Joe Beard was found later that day. He was found hiding inside a home in the Van Buren Housing Authority, said the Crawford County chief deputy. Beard tried to flee from deputies by climbing into the attic, but they were able to handcuff him and take him back to jail.

Billy Beard was an outside trustee of the Crawford County Detention Center, which means he is often outside of the jail doing yard work. According to Chief Deputy Jim Damante, it is common to have lower offending inmates doing work outside the jail. The Chief Deputy said at yesterday evening’s inmate count, Beard was not there and had apparently walked off the detention center grounds.

Billy Beard was in jail for petition to revoke and 2nd degree battery. He was scheduled to have a a court date Wednesday morning.

Deputies have also learned that Beard had been trying to contact his girlfriend prior to leaving the jail.
