FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – According to the Fayetteville Police Department, an 85-year-old woman who was found covered in feces and live maggots has died.
Sgt. Craig Stout said the woman died at Washington Regional Hospital. She was brought to the hospital in June after first responders were called to a home in Fayetteville to a report of an unresponsive woman, according to court documents.
The woman’s sister and daughter were subsequently arrested. Rose Mary Austin, 75, and Evelyn Schafer, 54, were arrested on suspicion of elder abuse.
The women told investigators, the victim had been injured following a fall, the documents state. Austin and Schafer left the victim on the couch where she remained for several days, according to the documents.
Police, and hospital staff, said the incident was one of the worst cases of neglect they had ever seen, the documents state.
