FORT SMITH (KFSM) --  According to Fort Smith City Administrator Carl Geffken, the list of those to be interviewed for the Fort Smith police chief position has been narrowed down to five.

"It's all set and scheduled for the middle of September," Geffken said.

The list of candidates are as follows:

Nathaniel Clark - Mark Hallum - Philip Kwasinski - Jeffery Matthews - Keith McPheeters

The candidates will go through a two day interviewing process.

"We have two panel interviews being done," Geffken said. "One, with an employee and community panel. Followed by another panel of the sheriff and prosecuting attorney and such."

Geffken gave an idea of what he is looking for in the new chief.

"We're looking for a police chief who can think and understand and is preparing to police in the 21st century," he said.

Geffken said a candidate will likely be chosen by the end of September.

Candidates to fill the positions of utilities director and human resources manager will also be interviewed.
