ARKANSAS (KFSM) — The price for the life-saving medical device “EpiPen” has sky-rocketed recently, and it has led to some major concerns for parents and how they will be able to afford the life saving device.
An EpiPen is a portable device that can stop a potentially life threatening allergic reaction. It’s a pre-filled, spring loaded syringe that delivers a single dose of epinephrine. When it’s taken within minutes of a severe reaction, it could mean the difference between life and death.
CBS News reports that the price has risen from about $100 seven years ago, to more than $600 today. Since the change, several parents in the area are concerned how they will treat their kids who have severe allergies.
Critics said many families can’t afford the price increase. However, the manufacturer said it has spent a lot of money supporting research and development and the EpiPens are priced at market value. “I think it’s very unfortunate that patients are having to pay so much for a life saving medication,” said Dr. Tina Merritt with the Allergy & Asthma Clinic in Northwest Arkansas.
According to Dr. Merritt, “I heard there’s a new competitor coming out next year, and that could be why the prices are going up.”
After days of criticism, the EpiPen manufacturers said they will offer a “savings card” to cover up to $300 for a two-pack.
