VAN BUREN (KFSM) - Greg Werner knew it would take time to turn around the Van Buren football program and as the Pointers enter the 2016 season, Werner is preaching toughness in his second year at the helm.

The Pointers looked to take a step forward in 2015 as they won two of their first three games but they hit tough times in the 7A-Central. Van Buren went winless in league play, including three straight losses from week five through week seven that came by seven points or less.

Since that season ended, Van Buren has been focused on toughness on the field but mentally as well.

"We feel like that's kind of been our motto since November of last year." Werner said. "Toughness and staying the course and we feel good about where we're at but we know we still have a long way to go."
"Toughness is what it's going to take," Van Buren senior Josh Aden said. "We can't quit on every play so we just have to keep that in mind."
Van Buren is looking to end a six year losing streak to Crawford County rival Alma as they kick off the season on Tuesday.
