SPRINGDALE (KFSM) -- Studies show that Arkansas ranks No. 1 in obesity rates, but there are ways to change that. During the next six weeks, many people will be training leading up to the Springdale Downtown Run Around, which is a 5K and 10K event.

Training for Couch to 5K takes place at the Jones Center starting at 5 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 29). This program is for anyone who wants to get more into running, or would like to shake things up with their fitness routine. The goal at the end is to be able to complete a 5K  jog. It's great for any level, even for those true couch potatoes. They'll start with different intervals like walking for one minute, and then jogging for one minute.

"Well I've always enjoyed running and doing anything like this," said Meredith Cupp, recreation coordinator for the Jones Center, who will also be training for the event. "I'm excited to be a part of it and getting to do it with a group of people is just fun and a great way to make more friends, and just getting to be around people who also want to be fit and healthy and just want to get outside and be together."

The 5K will take place on Oct. 8 starting at the Jones Center in Springdale. There will also be a one-mile fun run for families or younger kids.
