SPRINGDALE (KFSM) — A Tyson Foods Inc. disaster relief team returned from a trip to Louisiana on Monday (Aug. 29) after giving away more than 130,000 meals to flood victims over the past two weeks.
The team spent nine days in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as part of its Meals That Matter program, according to a press release. Cooking teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Texas traveled to the Cortana Mall in Baton Rouge to serve victims of the recent flooding at the disaster relief site, as well as throughout the area.
They cooked meals at the mall and then distributed them to members of the community. They also teamed up with local organizations to distribute additional frozen meals for flood victims.
Tyson sent a 53-foot semi-trailer with enough refrigerated space to store up to 20,000 pounds of product, the release states. The Meals That Matter program is capable of feeding more than 10,000 meals a day to disaster victims, first responders and volunteers.
“From the moment we arrived in Baton Rouge, we could tell there was a significant need to feed the community,” said Pat Bourke, Tyson Foods’ corporate social responsibility program manager. “Our volunteers served a record number of meals for a nine day deployment and I could not be more proud of their effort.”
