FORT WORTH (KFSM)–Austin Allen’s quarterback sneak helped Arkansas upset #15 TCU 41-38 in double overtime.
The Razorbacks established a run game early, as Rawleigh Williams gained 43 yards on the opening drive. That led to a Cole Hedlund 38 yard field goal, the sophomore’s first of the year. After a Horned Frog fumble resulted in no points for Arkansas, Austin Allen led another long drive into the red zone. Hedlund kicked another field goal for a 6-0 lead.
Later in the 2nd quarter, Fayetteville native Brooks Ellis stepped in front of a Kenny Hill pass and ran back a 45 yard pick-six. The senior put the Razorbacks up 13-0, a score that would hold until halftime. Hill did not get into rhythm , being swarmed by the Razorbacks defense throughout the first half. Williams led all players with 73 yards in the first half.
TCU struck first in the second half, as Kyle Hicks capped off a 9 play, 84 yard drive with a 13 yard rushing score. But the Razorbacks hung tough. After the teams traded punts, Austin Allen led a 6 play drive and found Drew Morgan in the corner of the endzone. The senior’s first touchdown of the season put the Razorbacks up 20-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Once again, the run game proved key for Arkansas in the final quarter. Rawleigh Williams converted a key 3rd down in the red zone, but Cole Hedlund’s 22 yard field goal hit the post. That enable Kavonte Turpin to post two long receptions and a 35 yard punt return. Each led to TCU rushing touchdowns, one by Kenny Hill and the other by Kyle Hicks.
Austin Allen did not back down, and found Keon Hatcher with a minute left to get within two. On the 2 point conversion, Hatcher completed a trick play pass to Allen to tie the game at 28, and Dan Skipper blocked a TCU field goal to win, sending the game to overtime. The teams traded touchdowns in the 1st overtime before Arkansas stepped up on defense to hold TCU to a field goal.
Arkansas hosts Texas State next Saturday at 6:30pm.
