GREENWOOD (KFSM) -- The Greenwood Police Department opened registration for a one-day class to train the community on what to do in an active shooter situation.

Shootings in public facilities have risen over the years, but training could help community members prepare for a worst-case scenario.

The Greenwood Police Department will be hosting a one-day class to help ensure the public can protect themselves in an active shooter situation. This is the second time the local police department is hosting this class.

There will be plenty of hands-on experience during the class, as participants are taught how to survive an active shooter situation. The motto for the class is "Avoid-Deny-Defend."

"Any knowledge you can gain to defend yourself is very important," said Brad Hobbs with the Greenwood Police Department.

Officers will show videos and set up mock scenarios so participants can get a train in an realistic environment. Participants will be able to learn how to make and identify makeshift weapons, whether an active shooter is inside an office building or a school.

"The scenarios will teach you on what you do and build your confidence to overcome those types of situations," Hobbs said.

The class will be Saturday, Oct. 22, but people need to start registering now. Anyone who is interested, can stop by the Greenwood Police Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Up to 44 people can sign up for the class, which is free and open to the public.
