ALMA (KFSM) — Two people were taken to the hospital after the SUV they were in hit a semi-trailer truck on Interstate 40 East at around 3:50 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 18), according to Arkansas State Police.

Witnesses tell police the driver of the Chevy Tahoe was traveling at a high rate of speed and clipped the back of the semi.  The SUV flipped several times into the westbound lanes, according to Trooper Court Williams.

Williams said traffic headed west was at a standstill for at least an hour.

The two men in the Tahoe were taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith with non-life threatening injuries. It’s not clear if they will face any charges or if alcohol was involved.

Traffic was at a standstill for at least an hour in the westbound lanes.

The driver of the semi was not injured, according to police.
