FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — The Fayetteville School District reported a confirmed case of the mumps at one of its middle schools Monday (Oct. 17), which means cases of the mumps have now spread to all four of the largest school districts in Northwest Arkansas.
Officials at Holt Middle School were notified late Monday afternoon that a student has a confirmed case of the mumps, according to school district spokesman Alan Wilbourn.
The Arkansas Department of Health requires students in the same school with a student who has a confirmed case of mumps who have vaccine exemptions for the mumps vaccine or no record of the vaccination to be excluded from school for 26 days from the date of exposure. Students with non-medical exemptions, who receive the mumps vaccine, may return to school immediately.
Mumps cases have also been reported in the Bentonville, Rogers and Springdale School Districts.
The latest report from the ADH indicates there is one case of mumps reported in Bentonville, seven cases in Rogers and 21 cases in Springdale, which is where the outbreak was first reported at the end of August.
The ADH is reported a total of suspected and confirmed cases in Benton, Washington and Madison Counties is 567 as of Monday.
