Halloween Decorations At Sallisaw Home Stir Up Controversy

SALLISAW (KFSM) -- For six years now, Daryl Jones has been decorating his Sallisaw home for Halloween

The decorations include hanging dolls from a tree.

"The baby dolls are supposed to be creepy," Jones said. "It's supposed to be scary."

But, this year, the city told him he would be ticketed if he didn't take them down.

"The city came out from Code Enforcement and told us that we had to take the dolls down," Jones said. "There was a complaint filed, and it offended someone. The city turned it over to the police department, and the police department send it to the [district attorney], and the [district attorney] threw it out."

Now the dolls are back up, and Jones said he doesn't know why someone would be offended.

"If I see something that offends me, I either don't look at it or I let it go," Jones said. "Then when you're trying to do something that is helping the community, making Halloween fun for kids, there's no reason for anybody to complain."

Hundreds of people have driven by to see the decorations over the years. Jones also does as little something extra for the trick-or-treaters who stop by.

"We give out lots of candy," Jones said. "Last year, we build about 500 trick-or-treat candy bags and this year, we're doing 700."

He said he plans to continue his Halloween traditions for years to come.

"It's fun to scare people," Jones said. "I have personally been a foster parent for 17 years, and I do it for the kids. It's fun to see the little kids in costume. It's fun to scare the kids and scare the adults."

From strangers to his own neighbors, Jones said most people like the decorations.

"A lot of people are coming by and saying, 'we support you, good job, and keep the dolls up,'" Jones said.

He plans to add more decorations as Halloween gets closer. Jones said he also decorates his lawn for Christmas.
