FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Former Fort Smith City Administrator Ray Gosack died Friday morning (Oct. 21), the City of Fort Smith confirmed.

Those who knew him best said he found out several weeks ago that he had a form of cancer and his illness spread quickly. He was 58 years old.

Gosack started his career with the city of Fort Smith in 1985 as an administrative assistant in utilities. In 1986, He was the acting Special Projects Coordinator. He resigned to serve as assistant village manger and director of management services for the Village of Homewood, Ill from 1988-99.

He  was then hired as the Fort Smith deputy city administrator and was promoted to City Administrator in 2011. He retired four years later.

"He always put the city first. Above personal wishes or desires. He always made decisions based on what is the right thing for the city," Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders said.

During his time with the city of Fort Smith, Gosack had a hand in the expansion of the landfill, sewer improvements, expansion of local parks, economic development and the development of the city's water supply.

Grace Community Church will host the funeral service next week and Edwards Funeral Home will handle the arrangements, according to Mayor Sandy Sanders.
