LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) — Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson announced plans to place War Memorial Stadium under the control of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism on Tuesday (Oct. 25).

Turning the stadium over the the parks and tourism department means the stadium will have access to more resources for its upkeep, including operational and marketing support. The move should also provide extra stability for the venue.

Additionally, Hutchinson announced that a feasibility study would be conducted to examine the long-term prospects of the stadium. Hutchinson said the study will help provide a fresh perspective on the stadium’s possibilities.

The parks and tourism department currently oversees 52 parks and museums, as well as 180 historic properties.

“This venerable venue holds a special place with many Arkansans, especially our veterans, and has provided a lot of great memories along the way,” Hutchinson said in a statement. “In order to continue that success while maintaining the stadium’s viability for future generations, I am proposing that War Memorial Stadium be moved under the direction of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.”

The proposal will go before the General Assembly during the 2017 legislative session.
